Pay Attention to the Right Details

Hospitals pay close attention to how many patients doctors are admitting, and each one wants to make certain they’re getting their share because most physicians and physician groups maintain admitting privileges at several hospitals.

“Our hospital staffs would always get excited when a doctor had a high level of admissions,” McCallister says, “and they’d all be ready to celebrate and say, ‘Oh look, Dr. X has twenty patients in the hospital today.’ The reality is that while Dr. Y only had four patients in the hospital because of the procedures and resources used, his patients were far more profitable than Dr. X’s.

“If you want to be an effective manager and leader,” he says, “you have to figure out what really matters and pay close attention, not to all the details, just the right ones. Identify the centers of influence within the business and make certain the leaders there are also attentive to the right details.” McCallister adds, “I’ve been fortunate to have been around a handful of people during my career who mastered the art of being well grounded, were blessed with good common sense, did their homework, understood the numbers, and paid attention to the right details without losing sight of the big picture.”
